SAVE Stoneham Park!

There are few other places in the United Kingdom where such unbroken continuity in the landscape can be demonstrated to the public.

31/10/12

The Fight Continues!

Thank you to all those people who have signed our paper and online petitions, these have been submitted along with objections, your support is appreciated and hopefully will go someway to keeping Stoneham Park as it is now!.

(The online petition will remain open for newcomers to sign, so if you haven't already, please sign our petition).

The formal examination of the plan and your objections to it should start in Spring 2013.

Before then however to keep the profile of the campaign in the headlines we do plan another walkabout, to ensure awareness is raised. Councillors and the MP from Southampton visited the site last week, which is seemingly more than the Councillors and MP from Eastleigh who refuse to meet us at the site.

Below is an extract from the Daily Echo (Saturday 13th Oct), where the council leader mentions keeping "Green Gaps", not something that rings at all true with the people living near Stoneham Park, Botley, Boorley Green or Sundays Hill!.

Please sign our petition - every signature counts!.

Thank you to all those attended, your support is much appreciated and hopefully goes someway to showing the Councillors that there is indeed public feeling about the issues of building on Stoneham Park and the Sainsbury's expansion onto Leigh Road recreation ground.

An article has appeared on BBC online and can be viewed >here<

Also today on BBC Radio Solent with Alina Jenkins, you can hear it at 01.45 on the  playback >here<

All previous comments submitted by you will not be seen by the Independent Planning Inspector, as that stage was “passed” by the council, this is now finally your last chance for your voice to be heard!.

The formal examination of the plan and your objections to it should start in Spring 2013.

1st August 2012

The Council meeting has now passed, Stoneham Park was passed

by a vote of 37 for and 5 against - how this is reflecting public views, we're really unsure!!!. Boorley Green and Botley were also passed at the same meeting despite similar heavy opposition.

What happens now? -

We have until October to mount an appeal, which will go to Government, so please do keep signing our online petition, every signature counts, as does our paper petition, which is available locally for signing.

Hurdles for the Council to navigate that we're aware of include Legal agreements drawn up regarding Strategic Green Gaps in place with Southampton City Council and Test Valley Borough Council - which require breaking, also covenants placed on certain parts of the park, including by the original owners and Hampshire County Council who still insist there part of the park will only be allowable for small scale development (300 homes only).

The Council leader was on BBC Radio Solent on Thursday 26th July on the Julian Clegg breakfast show, thankfully we were given the right to reply - the show can be listened to >here<

Please sign our petition - every signature counts!.

27th May 2012

A thank you to you all for attending Walkabout 2, it was a good turn out, sadly not one of the 39 Borough Councillors that were invited and failed to reply came along. You the residents voted these people in, please do keep this in mind when it comes to local elections. If they cannot even reply to the invitation that they cannot come with a reason, they're simply not looking after your interests.

Please do tell your friends, colleagues and family about this site and campaign, we need your support!, have a sign in your car, garden or window of your home?, or simply sign the petition - every signature counts!.

Walkabout 2!, "A Demonstration" - another Walkabout is being arranged for 26th May 2012, starting off from Doncaster Farm Pavilion at 3pm, all of the Eastleigh Councillors have been invited to attend, we do hope they can all make it as they will be voting on the proposals in the coming months, so we feel it only right they attend and see just what they're going to recommend.

Just incase you were expecting them......

16/05/12 : Sadly so far, Councillors Paul Bicknell and Alan Broadhurst have sent there apologies and are unable to attend on this date  -we will be asking them when they can be available in due course as this issue is very important to the community - 42/44 to attend?.

21/05/12 : Sadly two more Coucillors cannot make it, Keith House (Council leader) and Steve Sollitt - 40/44 to attend?, should be a good turn out, however it is disappointing that the Leader and the local ward councillor cannot attend.

23/05/12 : Sadly Councillor Godfrey Olson is unable to attend, however he did come on our first walkabout and fully supports our campaign - 39/44

27th March 2012 -

Our I-petitionhas now been launched, please take a look and take a minute of your time to sign it. By signing it, you are demonstrating your agreement with our goal of "Saving Stoneham Park".

24th March 2012 -

Thank you to all those who attended our walkabout today...

The walk lasted around 65minutes where everybody on the walk were given a flyer with details of the proposed site and given the opportunity to see first hand just how big this site is and what a loss to Eastleigh's fine heritage this will be.

Pictures of the walk can be found>here< .

Walkabout 24th March 2012 - Doncaster Farm Pavillion - 2pm -

Coming and see what you're going to miss!

We are planning to have a walkabout the proposed Stoneham Park site, this walk will effectively walk the "Red" boundary on the map on our home page. A circular route that will take around 90 minutes, in places it is likely to be quite muddy, so please keep this in mind when choosing your footwear!.

Why should you care about Stoneham Park? Its place in Eastleigh's History?.

Stoneham Park and its surrounding landscape can be shown to contain features that demonstrate a remarkable continuity of land use which stretches from the Roman period to the present day. This landscape is almost unique at present in that it is one of the few ancient manors in England where development can be traced in an almost uninterrupted line for two thousand years. Considering the importance of this landscape to the provisioning of Saxon Southampton, it should be afforded greater merit as part of that city's heritage than its present status affords. Efforts should be made to prevent any future deprivations, and attempts should be made to bring as much of this landscape into public ownership as possible for use as a recreational, and above all, unique educational resource that it represents. There are few other places in the United Kingdom where such unbroken continuity in the landscape can be demonstrated to the
public.

Modern day Stoneham Park is an area in the Green belt between Eastleigh and Southampton's boundary. It is teaming with wildlife, also partly used for agriculture and equestrian activities. It is steeped in history and even features in its own leaflet distributed by Eastleigh Borough Council for Walks.

More information about its valuable and rich history can be viewed > here <.

What has happened locally thus far?.

Eastleigh Borough Coucil has produced its draft local plan, summarising possible events over the next 30 years. It produced an informative leaflet in which it gave two options for the construction of new housing sites.

Option A was Allington Lane (1400 homes), Stoneham Park (1300 homes) and

Hedge End (1000 homes) - 3700 homes in total.

Option B was Boorley Green (1400 homes), Stoneham Park (1300 homes) and

Hedge End (1000 homes) - 3700 homes in total.

So for both Stoneham Park and Hedge End there simply was no choice, question or canvassing for support of local feeling.

Away from what the council distributed, also in plans was a potential new town effectively on Allington Lane, which would have taken up all the 3700 homes and had potential for much further growth, but this was rejected by the Council leader without any debate or question (to close to his ward?).
